چکیده

“Does increasing women’s schooling raise the schooling of the next generation?” is the question posed by Jere Behrman and Mark Rosenzweig (2002) in their eponymous article. Their answer to the question is no. In fact, they conclude that raising women’s schooling may even lower the schooling of the next generation. In this paper, we show that Behrman and Rosenzweig’s results are not robust to alternative coding schemes and sample selection rules, and we show that the policy inference may be misguided. ∗Respectively, Department of Economics, University of California, San Diego, email: [email protected], and Department of Economics, University of Wisconsin, email: [email protected] †We thank Jere Behrman, Charles Manski, Robert Mare, Mark Rosenzweig, Jeffrey Wooldridge, participants in the Institute for Research on Poverty Summer Workshop and especially Vida Maralani, for instructive advice.

However, most studies excluded both twin mothers and twin offspring from the analyses. Thus, the objective of this study was to investigate the intergenerational effect of preterm birth and SGA births among twins and singletons. A prospective population-based register s...

“The Motherhood Wage Gap for Women in the United States: The Importance of College and Fertility Delay”

One of the stylized facts from the past thirty years has been the declining rate of first births before age 30 for all women and the increase rate of first births after age 30 among women with four-year college degrees (Martin 2000). What are some of the factors behind women's decision to postpone their childbearing? We hypothesize that the wage difference often observed between like-educated m...
